Mexico Agrees to Extradite 29 Fugitives to US

President Trump’s plan to increase tariffs for countries across the world is already producing results. In a bid to avoid US tariffs on Mexican imports earlier this year, Mexican officials agreed to extradite 29 important cartel members that were of significant importance to US law enforcement agencies in a show of good faith.

Among the individuals extradited is the alleged DEA killer Rafael Caro Quintero. This suspect has been sought after by US officials for over 40 years. Other suspected criminals that were extradited include Miguel Angle Trevino and Omar Trevino, two fugitives who are accused of founding the Zetas Cartel, which is accused of committing brutal acts of violence for gang-related purposes over the years.

These two suspects were known on the street as Z-40 and Z-42, and they were wanted both in the United States and Mexico for trafficking drugs across international borders, ordering several extremely violent massacres, kidnapping, and murder. Miguel was eventually arrested in 2013, and Omar was captured in 2015, but both were only just now approved for extradition to the US.

This arrest is considered so significant that police in Webb County, Texas, have been urging citizens to take extreme caution and reconsider border crossings temporarily in light of the extradition. Police fear that criminals on the other side of the border may attempt to retaliate against Americans for the recent extradition agreement.

Andrew Clark is another fugitive who will be extradited to the US. This Canadian citizen is accused of taking part in a multi-country drug ring that spanned across Canada, the US, and Mexico. This drug ring was reportedly being run by former Olympic snowboarder Ryan James Wedding.

Out of all the 29 individuals being extradited, at least six could be subject to the federal death penalty. This is significant to note, since the Mexican government has historically been hesitant to extradite citizens that could face capital punishment.

With President Trump’s “Liberation Day” plan in full effect, new economic and political agreements are likely forthcoming. It’s yet to be seen whether more criminal suspects from other countries may finally get their day in court here in the United States.

What to Know About Extradition

Have you ever been accused of committing a crime in a foreign country? If so, then it’s absolutely necessary to research and understand the extradition laws in your country as well as the country attempting to charge you with a crime.

Depending on the situation, the country you’re currently in could arrest you and send you to face court in the other country. That said, rules, jail conditions, and rights are not always equal in different countries.

Considering all that, it’s absolutely critical to hire a qualified international attorney if you think you might face extradition. A good lawyer will help you exhaust every potential opportunity to avoid the potential of having to face court in another country.
