Al Jazeera Asks ICC to Investigate Journalist’s Murder

Al Jazeera is a controversial television network that recently pleaded with the International Criminal Court to open an investigation into the murder of one of the network’s journalists. According to reports, the journalist was covering clashes occurring on the West Bank in May. Abu Akleh was wearing a vest marked “Press” and she was in a helmet. As she was reporting on the situation, she was reportedly fatally shot.

According to the victim’s niece, the family still has no idea who fired the deadly shot or who ordered the shot to be fired. Despite that, many are demanding an investigation into whether Israel Defense Forces played a role in the incident.

Many believe that Israel has a specific mission to silence Al Jazeera, which often publishes stories that don’t paint Israel in the best light. Israel, which isn’t a member of the ICC, has stated that they will not cooperate in any external probe regarding the journalist’s murder. They believe that any new investigation into the matter would be both biased and misleading. They have, however, stated that an internal investigation revealed a “very high likelihood” that the bullet came from an Israel Defense Forces weapon. Despite that, they firmly reject the notion that the journalist was deliberately targeted.

Evidence suggests otherwise, though, as there were no other gunshots being fired in the area except by Israel soldiers once the journalist was in full view of them.

Right now, the US has accepted the Israeli conclusion regarding the matter, and they oppose a new investigation.

How to Handle International Criminal Charges
